THE NEED IS DIRE AND IT IS URGENT BUT (I PUT IT TO YOU) IS ALSO RELATIVELY EASY TO ACCOMPLISH, BY THE OUTLAWING UNDER PAIN OF REVOKING AN ISP's LICENSING RIGHTS AND YES I AM WELL AWARE OF THE GOVERNMENTS RELUCTANCE TO STEP INTO THIS ARENA, IF ONLY (I PUT IT TO YOU), FOR NO OTHER REASON THAT THEIR ARE VAST SUMS OF MONEY INVOLVED HERE MANY,MANY BILLIONS PER ANNUM, TO SAY NOTHING OF SOME PEOPLES PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT WITH THE PORNOGRAPHIC INDUSTRY ITSELF (NOT MENTIONING, ANY NAMES HERE OF COURSE).
IF WHAT I HAVE SAID/ IMPLIED IS INCORRECT OR FALSE THEN YOU HAVE MY APOLOGISES, NO OFFENCE INTENDED.
HOWEVER I AM INCREASINGLY CONCERNED AT THE OVERWHELMING EASE BY WHICH ONE CAN ACCESS HARD-CORE PORNOGRAHY ON THE INTERNET AND ITS UNBELIEVABLY EASY ACCESS TO CORRUPTION. JUST TYPING IN THE INNOCENT WORD LIKE 'GIRLS' INTO 'GOOGLE' OR 'YAHOO' SEARCH BAR UNVEILS A PLETHORA OF WEBSITES OF HARDCORE SEX SITES ACCESSIBLE TO ANYONE SEEKING TO LUST AND/OR FANTASISE AT ANY TIME OF THE DAY.
THERE IS LITTLE OR NO CONTROL OR CENSUS ON ANY CONTENT WHATSOEVER WITH ANY INTERNET WEBSITES, I THINK YOU WILL AGREE.
PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! HELP PUT A STOP TO THIS CORRUPTION IN OUR NATION, OUR SOCIETY IS SLIDDING EVER FASTER INTO A MAELSTROM OF CORRUPTION AND DARKNESS THE LIKES OF WHICH HAS BROUGHT MANY MIGHTY EMPIRES TO EXTINCTION!!! I REFER PRIMARILY TO SEX AND PORNOGRAPHY, RAMPANT ADULTERY AND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY
PLEASE HELP TO MAKE BRITAIN GREAT ONCE MORE.................CORRUPTION IS RAMPANT IN OUR SOCIETY
OH THAT I HAD THE POWERS SUCH AS YOU HAVE TO CAST MY VOTE TO BAN THE SEX TRADE AND PORNOGRAPHIC WEBSITES. AND NO I AM NOT A PRUDE NEITHER AM I A RELIGIOUS CRANK BUT I AM A VERY CONCERNED CHRISTIAN AND I TELL YOU GOD WILL NOT STAND BY MUCH LONGER BEFORE HE WILL DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT SO…… ALREADY WE ARE SUFFERING A GLOBAL FINANCIAL MELT-DOWN, WHAT WILL BE NEXT???!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT BE AS THE BLIND MAN! IN OTHER WORDS HAVE THE ATTITUDE OF ONE WHO IS REPENTANT OF WHAT WE ARE DOING IN THIS COUNTRY! OUR COUNTRY
STOP IT! STOP IT! STOP IT!

IGF have a long road ahead of them. As the internet is a relatively new technology it is hard to govern and fully understand its implications on society. We will have a better idea in around 20+ years on how it has really affected us. Currently it is seen as a bonus but it has its drawbacks too in life with people always being switched on.

List is quite useful.

Internet safety is one of my topic as I already have started blog to help people to be safe online.

My target audiences are specifically parents, teachers, youngsters and kids.

Good post.

Hi
It's really great that you've been working with young people on this and we're interested to hear more about your methods, what young people thought, how this will be presented at IGF and what impact it will have.

The HUWY project http://huwy.eu/ aims to do something very similar for young people (aged around 16 -21).

It's a pilot - at the moment running in UK, Ireland, Germany and Estonia -due to launch online in December.

We'd love to work with you to keep young people involved in policies and legislation that impact on the Internet. We also think that this is the best way to govern the Internet.

I applaud the sentiment but feedback from the parliamentary candidates at the EURIM Dragons Den at the LibDem party conference illustrates the problem. I have just blogged on their reaction: http://www.computerweekly.com/blogs/when-it-meets-politics/2009/09/accurate-but-friendly-fire-fro.html

After a very good presentation by Phil Kingsland they agreed that it was the only sensible way forward but it was politically boring, compared to jumping on a Daily Mail “something must be done” bandwagon. In consequence we run the risk of a Dangerous Computers Act in the UK, let alone a concerted attempt by Governments around the world to bring the Internet to heel, perhaps under the guise of co-operation against terrorism and money laundering (alias tax avoidance)

Their answer to this, and to the other problems raised, was to get many more of the Internet Community, especially those suppliers who want to be loved and left alone, involved in educating their own constituency MPs and candidates rather than leaving it to others.

I would add the need to persuade sales and marketing directors that better practice than the competition wins more business and to persuade finance directors that co-operating with the competition to address common problems makes for more profitable business. That approach raises other governance problems but I do not believe we will succeed until we engage their hearts and wallets.

That said, I look forward to working with you and colleagues to overcome the problems I have just flagged.

Interesting list, mostly good points.
ref. 8. God spare us from government IT support. That has to be the worst of all worlds. The UK IT community has been clobbered with immigration, off-shoring, IR35 and poor education. The government has to date chosen to make these things worse rather than better. There is a real hole in the market, best left to the market to provide. The obvious answer is to buy Apple if you can't find PC support.
ref 1. Web access will come via mobile phones if they are allowed to develop in the right way. No point in pushing desk-tops now.
ref. 2 and 3. Yes, the funding of national infra-structure does need some discussion, and always will.
ref. 4. Ofcom needs to get some fresh ideas on quality of service.
ref. 5. Who would want to be an ISP these days? I think the state of the ISP market counts as significant reguatory failure and needs to be addressed with some urgency.
